A tag lets you group tracked records by something a project alone can’t capture — a client, a cost center, anything that cuts across several projects at once.
You can add tags to a record by hand, but it’s usually easier to set them once on the project (or on one of its activities): every new record tracked there then picks up those tags automatically, with nothing left to remember.
The real payoff shows up in statistics: filter by tag instead of project, and you can see exactly how much time went into a client or cost center, no matter which project it was tracked under.
